Deployment: Hammer and Anvil

Here's the yellow side of things behind a screen of Intercessors.

And the sparse field populated by daemons.

I felt that I did a very good job deploying, by putting a squad of Nurglings in the center ruin, to deny the Scouts a first-turn relic pick-up. The Fists skipped on putting Scouts left and right, so the additional Nurglings camped the objectives behind the hills.

Imperium, turn 1

Nothing eventful, with the front lines advancing and shooting into the Nurglings and Beasts, and snipers into the front Herald, but nothing died and nothing was scored.

Chaos, turn 1

I noticed two squads close enough to each other, so I landed 20 Bloodletters on the left flank, killed the Scouts and surrounded an Intercessor. The game was on.
The warlord needed to go on a backfield objective for the 4 points on Priority Orders Received, and I scored all 3 objectives plus First Blood, giving me the lead.

Imperium, turn 2

The jetbikes move in on the Bloodletters. Custodes terminators reinforce the left flank.

The middle is still much contested.

The bikes kill the Bloodletters. I interrupt combat for nothing. Well, I killed 2 Intercessors and inflicted 1 wound on a Shield Captain.

Chaos, turn 2

I landed the Obliterators as far back as I could and opened up on the bikes, who over-consolidated. Due to some good rolls and bad positioning on my part, I killed the warlord, but nothing else. Cue Shoulder the Mantle and warlord kill is denied.

I also landed 20 Bloodletters on the right flank, who then took a Tanglefoot Grenade to the face for -5 charge distance and failed miserably.

Still, I scored Maelstrom points like a boss.

Imperium, turn 3

The Jetbikes move into the Obliterators, killing them with extreme prejudice. The rest of the Firepower eliminates the Bloodletters in the open.

Chaos, turn 3

I sprung the trap! Obliterators fall back, and 30 Bloodletters land to take down the Custodes. Spawn and Nurglings eat the Overwatch.

52 attacks, hitting on 2+, wounding on 5+, 6 do double damage. Inflicted just not enough damage such that both bikes survived.

Imperium, turn 4

The bikes fell back and laid into the Bloodletters with bolters. Intercessors move unto the relic. Custodes Terminators kill a Spawn and two Beasts of Nurgle. Their firepower is impressive, and their melee damage is horrendous.

Chaos, turn 4

Bloodletters move towards the bikes. They. Shall. Not. Escape.

Bikes die miserably to 1 Smite and Obliterator shooting. All the saves that were not failed the previous turn failed now.

I try to capitalize but roll low on the charge, and only manage to kill 1 more Intercessor squad.

We were a bit into overtime, so it was time to sum up points. I had the clear lead on Maelstrom (again), but barely scored any kills (again), and the eternal war Relic tipped the balance. 11-9 to the Imperium.

Aftermath

I think I made some fine tactical decisions in the beginning, by denying the Scouts the relic, denying the Aggressors any relevance (they did not fire a single shot) and denying some kill points by retreating my injured Spawn and Herald. However, as time passed, I forgot stuff (such as the Tanglefoot Grenade - horrible stratagem) and made some positioning errors. Most of all, I should have gone for the Relic - all those points could have made the game.

I would have had the chance to be a Tony at the end, with the Intercessor in base contact with the relic having slipped due to wobbly model and being at 1 mm distance, but I figured a gentlemanly conclusion was more important than points, and I did not want to decide based on whether it made a difference after summing up points.
